Landmarks as Backgrounds

Portrait subject too small
Landmark cut off

When you take portraits in front of a large building or statue, you may find either that the portrait subjects are dwarfed by the massive structure behind them or that the portrait subjects are well-framed but the landmark is mostly cropped out.

Balanced composition

This can be prevented by moving your subjects to a position farther in front of the landmark and using a standard rather than a wide-angle lens. Stop aperture down slightly for a composition in which both the portrait subjects and the background are in focus.
